Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Jill Scott was raised by her grandmother and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other positions. Her dream was to be a English High School teacher. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she quit school. Being a poet She began to sing at live poetry recitals. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. In Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. Later, she secured collaborations stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experiences on the stage, as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
